The multiwavelength excitation fluorophotometer can measure the fluorescence characteristics of phytoplankton and know what species are present in the species composition as well as its abundance. A multiwavelength excitation fluorometer allows for "simultaneous measurement of biomass and species composition" that could not be achieved with conventional chlorophyll fluorescence spectrometers.
